Shipping Cost
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car?
There is no single price for car shipping. Your quote is built from the details of your shipment, and these are the factors that matter most. We do not publish made-up averages, so the fastest way to see your actual price is to ask.
Distance
Longer routes cost more in total, though the price per mile often drops on long hauls.
Vehicle Size
Larger, heavier vehicles take up more space and weight capacity on the carrier.
Vehicle Condition
Vehicles that do not run may need a winch or special loading equipment.
Transport Type
Enclosed transport typically costs more than open transport.
Route
Popular corridors usually have more carrier availability than remote routes.
Season
Demand rises in busy moving seasons, and winter weather can affect some routes.
Accessibility
Tight streets or restricted areas may mean meeting the carrier at a nearby location.
Scheduling Flexibility
A flexible pickup window makes it easier to match your shipment with a carrier.
Auto Transport Basics
Nationwide Car Shipping Made Simple
Whether you are relocating, buying a car out of state or sending a vehicle to a family member, Route One Auto Transport helps you ship your car across the country without putting the miles on it yourself.
What Is Auto Transport?
Auto transport, also called car shipping or vehicle transport, moves your vehicle on a carrier truck instead of adding miles to the odometer. Most shipments travel on an open carrier that hauls several vehicles at once. Enclosed trailers are available for vehicles that need extra protection from weather and road debris.
Door-to-Door Auto Transport
With door-to-door auto transport, the driver picks up your vehicle at or near your address and delivers it to your destination the same way. Large carriers cannot always fit on narrow or residential streets, so the driver may ask to meet you at a nearby, easy-to-access spot such as a large parking lot.
Interstate and Cross-Country Car Shipping
Interstate auto transport covers moves between neighboring states, while cross-country car shipping handles the long hauls from coast to coast. Transit time depends on distance, the route, weather and the carrier’s schedule, so plan around a pickup window rather than a single fixed day.
Get the Most From Your Quote
Accurate details lead to accurate quotes. Tell us the year, make and model, whether the vehicle runs, and where it is going. Being flexible with your pickup dates often makes it easier to match your shipment with an available carrier.
Preparing Your Vehicle
Wash the exterior so existing marks are easy to see, photograph the vehicle from every angle and remove loose or valuable items. At pickup, the driver completes an inspection report, and you review it again at delivery.

Questions Answered
Auto Transport FAQ
How much does it cost to ship a car?
The cost depends on distance, vehicle size and condition, open or enclosed transport, the route, the season and how flexible your schedule is. Every shipment is different, so the best way to see your price is to request a free quote with your pickup and delivery locations and vehicle details.
How long does auto transport take?
Transit time varies with distance, route, weather, traffic and the carrier’s schedule. Shorter regional moves are generally quicker than cross-country shipments. We share an estimated timeframe for your specific route when you request a quote.
Is my vehicle insured during transport?
Insurance coverage depends on the carrier assigned to your shipment. Before you book, ask for the carrier’s insurance details and what they cover. Your personal auto policy may also offer coverage, so check with your insurance provider.
Can I put personal items inside my vehicle?
We recommend shipping the vehicle empty. Many carriers do not allow personal items, and items left inside are often not covered by carrier insurance. If you need to leave something small in the vehicle, ask about the carrier’s rules before pickup.
Do I need to be present during pickup?
You or someone you trust, such as a friend or family member, should be there at pickup to hand over the keys and review the inspection report, and again at delivery to inspect the vehicle and sign off.
What's the difference between open and enclosed transport?
Open transport uses an uncovered carrier that hauls several vehicles and is the most common, economical option. Enclosed transport uses a covered trailer that offers added protection from weather and road debris, which makes it popular for luxury, classic and exotic vehicles.
Can you transport a non-running vehicle?
In many cases, yes. Inoperable vehicles may need a carrier with a winch or special loading equipment, so tell us about the condition when you request a quote.
How far in advance should I book?
Request your quote as early as you can, ideally a week or two before your preferred pickup date. A flexible pickup window gives you more options, and busy seasons may need more lead time.
