How It Works
How Auto Transport Works
From your first quote to final delivery, here is what to expect when you ship a vehicle with Route One.
The Process
Your Vehicle’s Journey in 4 Simple Steps
01
Request your quote
Share your pickup and delivery ZIP codes, the vehicle’s year, make and model, whether it runs and your preferred shipping date. The more accurate the details, the more accurate your quote.
02
Book your shipment
Review your options for open or enclosed transport and confirm your preferred pickup window. After you book, your shipment is coordinated with a carrier on your route.
03
We pick up your vehicle
The driver contacts you to arrange pickup, inspects the vehicle with you and records its condition on an inspection report. Review it before you sign.
04
Vehicle delivered
At delivery, you and the driver review the vehicle against the inspection report. Note any concerns on the report before you sign off.
Before Pickup
How to Prepare Your Vehicle
Wash the exterior
A clean vehicle makes existing scratches and dents easy to document on the inspection report.
Take photos
Photograph every side, the roof and the interior with a date stamp so you have your own record.
Remove personal items
Carriers generally do not allow personal belongings, and they are often not covered. Remove valuables and loose items.
Check fuel and fluids
Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and note any leaks or mechanical issues for the driver.
Keys and access
Provide one set of keys and tell the driver about alarms, special starting steps or anything unusual.
Be available
You or a trusted person should be present at pickup and delivery to sign the inspection report.
Questions Answered
Common Questions
How long does auto transport take?
Transit time depends on distance, route, weather and carrier schedules. Long, cross-country routes naturally take longer than regional ones. Ask your Route One contact for the estimate for your route.
Do I pay before pickup?
Payment terms are confirmed when you book. Ask about payment methods and timing so there are no surprises.
What if I can’t be there for pickup or delivery?
You can name someone you trust to meet the driver. They should be able to review and sign the inspection report on your behalf.
Where can I read about open and enclosed transport?
See our guide to open vs. enclosed auto transport for a side-by-side comparison.
